Minchellas Ice Cream Parlour in Ocean Road is one oldest one of three parlours that the family have in the town, with the other newer ones located in the Marine Park and the seafront. Built in the 1940's the Ocean Road shop has managed to keep the feel of the 1950's and has never seemed to changed since I first went in as a small child and had my first knickerbocker glory that seemed as tall as a skyscraper with a huge slender spoon and the smell and sounds of the coffee machine behind the counter. If your visiting South Shields then you have to pay them a visit and try one of their famous ice creams (a 99 is my favourite) that have won many awards over the years, you can buy it from the shop window to eat in the street or if you need a short rest they now have seating outside weather permitting.
